A few years ago when I moved to my current LA neighborhood I was looking for a place to hike near the house and went to a small trail somewhere behind a couple homes near a completely residential area. Just a short walk later I came face to face with a deer… yes a deer, and one with very big antlers!
I know they are gentle animals, in fact the deer spirit animal is said to teach us gentleness and unconditional love, but when one is standing a few steps away with powerful antlers it’s quite intimidating! He was probably just as surprised as I was.
I turned back, hoping he would find his way back to his doe and bigger forest, like the one in my diorama, in company of fox, hare and squirrels…
I hesitated between making my story about deers or a fox and a hare, but I found that fables of hares and foxes rarely end well! So I made my story one where the fox and the hare discover they are “deer” to each other, as much as the sun and moon… so much in fact that they shared the apple of love and decided to form a home together.
