The holidays may be just over, but now is actually the best time to get ready for the end of the year! One of my resolutions for 2017 was to hold a daily project, and to stay accountable I’m doing it with my friend Sara. We’re using Jennifer Orkin Lewis’s book Draw Every Day Draw Every Way and for January decided to go with the “month of your choice” and to dedicate it to holidays and winter scenes.
Though not every sketch and bit of painting turned into something usable, at the end of the month there was enough good stuff to put together a nice little collection.
Part of the fun of a daily project is to try new materials and techniques. I rediscovered how much I love to paint with gouache and also started to play with the iPad app Procreate to paint polar bears and a reindeer on skies.
For a new twist on Santa I was inspired by vintage images from the Victorian era when they had long robes and carried a tree along with the typical bag of toys. Though my Santa went through a whole reconstructive surgery in Photoshop, doing the original painting by hand really set the style and colors which would have been different had I done it directly in the computer.
And to round this off snowmen and snowflakes cause no holiday collection would be complete without them!
